Accrington
professional Alan Worsick smashed eight huge sixes out of the ground
in his highest score for the club to date as he and opener Graham Beech
(38) put together a century stand in the visitors' 24 run win at Enfield.
Worsick, survived three dropped catches to hit 79 in just 55 balls as
Accrington made 176-6, their highest score of the season before a shirt
sleeved crowd, who paid £165.25 to watch in glorious sunshine.
Accrington had slow start with Geoff Hayhurst batting for an hour for
16 before becoming the first of three successive victims for Peter Holt,
who picked up 4-88 in 10 overs with the Accrington professional taking
a liking to his bowling before Keith Windle took a superb catch to give
the Enfield medium pacer his 4th wicket. Holt's last five overs cost
an amazing 71 runs after conceding just 17 in his first five. Beech
batted for 2 hours and 25 minutes before being stumped by Frank Martindale
off Ryan. Worsick and Dave Parsons then dismissed David Stanley and
Eric Nuttall before Geoff Dixon (15) and professional Dik Abed mounted
a rescue operation to put Enfield back in the match. Malcolm Taylor
broke the partnership with a superb diving catch to dismiss Dixon off
the bowling of Parsons. Windle, Ian Metcalf and David Southworth soon
followed and the match seemed lost when wicketkeeper Martindale joined
Abed. The burley wicketkeeper played a cavalier innings of 45, more
than doubling the total to 123, before both players were superbly taken
on the leg side boundary by Parsons with Abed departing for 62 with
3 overs to go. Worsick (4-71) and Gallagher (3-37) cleaned up the tail
to give Accrington another vital bonus point to keep them joint top
with Ramsbottom after a fourth successive win.
