Accrington
chalked up a second successive win but they had to work hard to get
home with just 2 wickets left after bowling East Lancs out for 82 at
Thorneyholme Road. The visitors opener Russ Cuddihy was first to go
when professional Alan Worsick had the former Accrington man brilliantly
caught one handed by Geoff Hayhurst for 15. Worsick also removed Jim
Kenyon for 10 with Ian Birtwistle getting Brian Ratcliffe stumped by
Terry Neville for 12 and Tony Gallagher bowled David Adams for 10 but
there was no sign of the trouble head with East Lancs looking settled
on 79-4. Professional Kerry O'Keeffe made a painstaking 24 before Birtwistle
had him snapped up behind by Neville. Worsick then returned to run through
the tail as the last 6 wickets fell for the addition of just 3 runs,
Worsick finishing with 5-30 and Birtwistle 3-20. Accrington made a good
start in reply with the half century coming up in the 14th over with
Hayhurst looking in great form. Wickets began to fall at regular intervals
with O'Keeffe picking up 5-28 and Roger Sharp 2-15 and when Hayhurst
was run out by his skipper Peter West for 36 the visitors sensed an
opportunity. With 14 still needed Accrington had just 2 wickets left
but tailenders Gallagher and Neville saw the home side to victory with
Neville hooking Kenyon for four to seal victory.
