Accrington
handed Church a heavy beating for the second successive week following
up last Saturday's 9 wicket win with a 7 wicket triumph in front of
a disappointingly small crowd who paid only £50 at the gate. This
time it was Ian Birtwistle who wrecked the Church batting taking 6-21,
his best figures of the season to date as the visitors were bowled out
for 98, a total which included 19 extras. Professional Alan Worsick
began the destruction by dismissing both Church openers Shafiq Ahmed
(0) and Billy Wilkinson (1) with only 1 run on the board. Then Birtwistle
took over having Mick Walsh caught by Dave Parsons for 9. Skipper Steve
Metcalf (18) and Ian Osborne (19) put up some resistance but wicketkeeper
Paul Graham made Metcalf his second victim and John Swanney added Osborne
and Steve Sharpe (10) to his earlier catch, both off Birtwistle. Tony
Gallagher removed Marshall Pickup for 11 as the visitors crawled to
98-9 after 34 overs. Accrington's reply began in disastrous fashion
with Geoff Hayhurst holing out to Metcalf at mid on off the first
ball of the innings from Jack Houldsworth.
Peter West fell to Shafiq for 1 but Graham Beech and Malcolm Taylor
(21) got the score moving before Taylor was bowled by spinner Stuart
Bennett in his first Lancashire League spell. Enter Worsick to blast
his way to an unbeaten 44 with seven fours and a six to win the match
putting behind him three successive league ducks prior to this innings.
Beech batted through for an unbeaten 37 as Accrington stayed in joint
second spot with Enfield after 14 matches, 1 point behind Burnley.
