Accrington
moved into second place behind Burnley after handing local rivals Church
a 9 wicket beating at West End. The match proved to be a memorable one
for Accrington professional Alan Worsick, who celebrated the birth of
his baby son in style, claiming 6-37 as Church were dismissed for 72.
Worsick's first five overs yielded 0-17 but half an hour into the game
news was relayed to him that his wife Victoria had given birth to a
7lbs 11 oz baby boy. Spurred on by this Worsick then proceeded to take
5-6 in his next four overs, including the wicket of Church professional
Shafiq Ahmed, to destroy the Church early order. Ian Birtwistle also
grabbed 3-21 with opener Billy Wilkinson top scoring with 20 before
top edging a hook off Dave Parsons to Worsick at long leg. Fine catching
by the Accrington side contributed to the rout with eight dismissals
aided by the fielders. Opener Geoff Hayhurst and Graham Beech then took
the score into the 40s when Beech was spectacularly run out by Shafiq's
direct hit but skipper Peter West was in no mood to hang around, hitting
19 off one over from his opposite number Steve Metcalf to finish unbeaten
on 22 with Hayhurst hitting the winning run to finish on 23. Defeats
for Burnley and Ramsbottom meant that Accrington and Enfield shared
second spot on 46 points, 2 behind leaders Burnley at the halfway point
in the season.
