Accrington
lost for the first time this season going down to a last over defeat
at the hands of title rivals Burnley at Turf Moor by just 2 runs. The
home side made 164-7 with number eight batsman Joe Fletcher blasting
the quickest half century of the season to date in just 30 minutes with
his side struggling to set a defendable total. Professional Peter Plummer
hit 46 and skipper Roland Harrison 34 with Ian Birtwistle being the
pick of the Accrington bowlers with 3-43. Barry Foster again made early
inroads into the Accrington batting firing out Geoff Hayhurst (4), Graeme
Fowler (10), who was playing his first game of the season in place of
Graham Beech, and Alan Richardson (5). Malcolm Taylor held the innings
together with Alan Worsick hitting 30, but Fletcher returned to haunt
Accrington with the ball to remove the middle order with Plummer chipping
in to remove Worsick and Alan Kennedy (4). Terry Neville (10) again
hit useful runs to take Accrington into the last over needing just 5
to win with 2 wickets intact but Foster removed him off the 3rd ball.
Last man Dave Parsons was run out off the penultimate ball trying to
give Taylor the strike which left the middle order batsman stranded
after hitting a superb unbeaten 77.
