Accrington v Burnley
Saturday May 17th 1975

Accrington joined defending champions Ramsbottom at the top of the table after beating Burnley by 3 wickets at Thorneyholme Road. The visitors were joint second with Accrington before the game having lost just seven wickets in three matches but Alan Worsick (4-28) and Tony Gallagher (4-27) took four wickets each to dismiss them for 137. Burnley's top six, Neil Whalley (33), Peter Brown (23), skipper Roland Harrison (20), Mick McLeod (17), Trevor Pickup (13) and professional Peter Plummer (10) all made double figures but the Terry Neville - Gallagher combination struck four times to peg the visitors back. Again Accrington's early order struggled with the top three all falling in single figures with Barry Foster taking 2 wickets. Only Malcolm Taylor, who hit 46, looked comfortable as the home side slumped to 53-5 but the lower order again came good to pull the game out of the fire in the last over. Alan Kennedy made a sound 23 before becoming Plummer's 4th victim and with 6 overs left 43 were needed for victory with 3 wickets left. Ian Birtwistle (26 not out) and Gallagher (20 not out) took control and steered Accrington to victory in a nail biting finish which kept the crowd on the edge of their seats right until the end.
