Accrington 1st XI 1970

A crowd of less than 30 people watched Accrington's title hopes suffer another blow when the home side were held to a draw by local rivals Rishton in a rain affected game at Thorneyholme Road. Rishton took 43.6 overs in making 112 all out with Accrington facing just 16 overs in making 60 without loss in the 55 minutes they had to bat. Wicketkeeper Terry Neville's fine season continued with five catches and skipper Eddie Robinson took 4-18 to pass 50 league wickets for the season. Ian Birtwistle (2-24) picked up openers Keith Kennedy (26) and Bernard Smith (12). Alan Worsick (4-43) removed John Marsden (0), David Chew (1), Billy Wilkinson (0) and last man David Lomas who was well taken low down by Neville for 10 to end the much interrupted Rishton innings at 6.20pm. Robinson's victims included David Wells (23), Eric Whalley (7), Ronnie Smith (7) and Bob Coar (6). Professional and stand-in skipper Ken Higgs made an unbeaten 17. Rishton soon resorted to spin with professional Bruce Francis (31 not out) and Geoff Hayhurst (29 not out) making no attempt to chase an almost impossible target. Scorecard
