Accrington 1st XI 1970

A thrilling last over win took Accrington to the top of the table after securing a fourth win in five games this time at the expense of local rivals Enfield at a warm and sun drenched Dill Hall Lane. Alan Worsick soon dismissed Enfield opener Eddie Slinger 92) with the score on 10. Skipper Eddie Robinson snapped up Geoff Dixon (3), David Stanley (8) and home skipper Ian Metcalf (5) and when Worsick struck again to trap professional Dik Abed (10), Enfield were in real trouble on 37-5. Robinson held a return catch off George Holt (14) at 50 and Ian Birtwistle (1-10) dismissed former Accrington all rounder Derek Rushton (14) at 73. Veteran all rounder Jim Smith top scored with 30 before falling to Worsick (3-44) at 104. Two runs later David Southworth (13) became Robinson's 5th victim when Brian Rutter took the catch. A return catch off young Bernard Reidy (12) gave Robinson his 6th wicket at a cost of 69 runs and the home side were all out for 131. Alan Margerison was unbeaten on 13. Openers Geoff Hayhurst and professional Bruce Francis got Accrington off to a solid start. Whilst Abed bowled tightly, runs came freely off Rushton at the other end. As Accrington got behind the clock Francis lost his wicket to his opposite number Abed for 38 with the score on 64. Stand-in wicketkeeper Russ Cuddihy made a swift 15, including a six off Rushton but he too lost his wicket trying a repeat stroke at 91. With Accrington needing 41 to win in the last half hour, Alan Richardson hit an entertaining 27 before falling to Abed at 120. Lindon Dewhurst, playing his second game since returning to the club, helped Hayhurst take Accrington to victory, hitting the winning run with just 4 balls remaining. Hayhurst finished unbeaten on a career best 49. Scorecard
