Accrington's title hopes suffered another blow when they failed to beat East Lancs after having the visitors on the ropes on 95-7. Home professional Bruce Francis made his second league century, hitting a dozen fours and a six in his 104. Roger Sharp (4-37) removed opener Geoff Hayhurst for 1 with the total on 4 after East Lancs had put Accrington in to bat. Francis and Bob Ratcliffe then put on 114 for the 2nd wicket before the young all rounder chipped a simple return catch to Jim Kenyon after making 27. Russ Cuddihy helped Francis out on 27 before falling to Sharp without opening his account. Francis was next to go to Sharp at 148 and three runs later the medium pacer struck for the fourth time when he bowled Brian Rutter for 3. Alan Richardson (7 not out) and skipper Eddie Robinson (1 not out) took Accrington to 157 at which point Robinson declared. East Lancs openers skipper Brian Ratcliffe (20) and Mike Crowther (13) put on 24 before Crowther fell to Bob Ratcliffe who also removed Kenyon for 22. Alan Worsick had Ratcliffe caught behind by terry Neville for 20 and Robinson sent back professional Mike Pawley (1), David Adams (4) and Ian Houston (5). When Ian Birtwistle had Ray Kelly caught behind by Neville, who claimed four victims, East Lancs were in trouble at 95-7. Wayne Cooper kept Accrington at bay making 36 before becoming Robinson's fourth victim at 115. Brian Bowling and Dick Grogan then batted out time with East Lancs finishing on 136-8 after 38 overs.
