Alan Worsick bowls Tommy George

League leaders Accrington hung on to top spot inspite of being held to a draw by the next to bottom club Church in a local derby at West End. Church's stand-in skipper Jack Houldsworth batted on until his team had faced 46.3 overs leaving Accrington enough time to face just 28 overs to chase 172 for victory. Accrington skipper Eddie Robinson picked up the wicket of Billy Wilkinson for 16 after the openers had put on 27. Ian Birtwistle had the other opener Jimmy Haworth caught by Brian Rutter for 20 at 55. Alan Worsick removed Ian Osborne (13) at 92 and professional Jim Mitchell was trapped in front by the same bowler one run short of his half century at 121. Barry Wilson was next to go run out for 28, ten runs later. Worsick then got his 50th league wicket of the season in spectacular fashion by cleaning up Tommy George for 16. Steve Metcalf also left in spectacular style brilliantly caught one handed by the diving Rutter who had sped fully 25 yards towards the boundary. Robinson picked up Malcolm Abraham (5) and wicketkeeper Mick Hilton (0) with Worsick having Houldsworth caught by professional Bruce Francis for 3 to end the innings after 3 hours batting. Worsick finished with 4-46 and Robinson took 4-61. Francis began the run chase in positive fashion hitting 25 of the 40 runs he added with Geoff Hayhurst before being caught behind by Hilton off Houldsworth. Three runs later Mitchell removed Russ Cuddihy for 2. Bob Ratcliffe then put on 40 with Hayhurst before being bowled by Ken Wilkinson for a career best 36. Rutter also fell to Mitchell for 8 and one run later Lindon Dewhurst was run out by George for 1 at 115. Terry Neville was stumped by Hilton off Osborne without addition Hayhurst finished unbeaten on 39, batting out time with Birtwistle (9 not out) as Accrington closed on 130-6. Scorecard
