Accrington dropped down to second place after falling 2 runs short of a memorable victory over Bacup in a high scoring game at Thorneyholme Road. The visitors piled up 193-5 declared from 40.2 overs with Accrington taking 11 overs less to fall just 2 runs short of a much needed win. Bacup professional Tony Mann hit a league best 85 helped by Roger Law (46) in a good stand before both men fell to Alan Worsick (2-51). Opener Barry Wilson was run out for 15 with Ian Birtwistle (2-41) picking up the other opener George Westwell (33) and Peter Nicholson (7). Once again professional Bruce Francis led Accrington's reply with a fine innings of 80. Alan Richardson also made 26, Geoff Hayhurst 34 and skipper Eddie Robinson hit an unbeaten 32 to take his team just short of victory. Needing 3 runs to win off the final ball of the match, Worsick could only manage a single leaving Accrington 2 runs short. John Beaumont picked up the wickets of new opener Bob Ratcliffe (2), Russ Cuddihy (0), Brian Rutter (2) and Terry Neville (0) at a cost of 27 runs. Scorecard
