Former Accrington Stanley footballer Dennis Smith played a marathon innings of 41, made in three hours and six minutes as second placed Nelson meandered along to 145-9 declared against the league leaders Accrington who maintained their 1 point lead with just three matches to go after a dull draw at Seedhill.

Professional Johnny Wardle also made 53 in a 3rd wicket stand of 78 with Smith. Jimmy Gibson also made 21 with Jim Eland taking 5-35 and Accrington professional Hall 3-64. Wicketkeeper Jack Collier claimed three victims.

Opener Derek Rushton top scored with 41 and Brian Rutter made 23 not out in Accrington’s 91-6 after Nelson had batted for over three hours and not left enough time to bowl the visitors out.
