A superb innings of 75 by Lindon Dewhurst helped Accrington to a 4 wicket win over Ramsbottom at Thorneyholme Road. Ramsbottom batted first and declared at 171-6 with visiting professional Gul Mohammed making 85 at the top of the order. Accrington Professional Mick Raymer removed Ronnie Bowker (14) at 39 and Dewhurst easily ran out Ernest Chamberlain (15) at 113. Ten runs later Dewhurst bowled Mohammed for 85 and then Raymer picked up three wickets, two in quick succession as Ramsbottom slipped to 124-5. An unbeaten 24 by Geoff Marsden enabled the visitors to close their innings at 171-6. Les Carter was soon on his way back to the pavilion with the score on 6, but John Marsland and Dewhurst quickly assumed control and began to score heavily off the Ramsbottom attack on a soft wicket. Dewhurst went to his half century in just 52 minutes with his ten boundaries, containing many typical pulls, drives and straight hits back over the bowlers head. After hitting five more boundaries, Dewhurst perished with the score on 129, run out for 75, an innings that set his side up for a comfortable 4 wicket win. Marsland made exactly 50 before being dismissed by John Savage and Mohammed removed his opposite number Raymer for 5. It was left to Frank Rushton (16 not out) to see his side home after good support from Tommy Cunliffe (17).
