Accrington
A v Taverners B
The A Team bagged a welcome six points with a 59 run win over Taverners B at Thorneyholme Road. Both teams struggled to field a side with many players being unavailable but it was Accrington who came out on top quite comprehensively. The home side made the most of a featherbed pitch to score 164-4. One of the A Team's last minute recruits was former first team wicketkeeper Billy Rawstron, who opened the innings with stand-in skipper Nigel Stockley. Rawstron made 43 in an opening stand of 67 before holing out to mid wicket. Imran Hussain made a brief appearance before Zaed Hussain got in the action to make 12 in his own inimitable style. Alven Burrows made a brisk 19 and Mark Ashton an unbeaten 7 with the stand-in skipper making a league and ground best unbeaten 76 for Accrington. The
skipper used experience at one end and youth at the other as wickets
fell at regular intervals. Dwane Cox was first to go, bowled by Imran
Hussain for a duck. Father Mick followed, bowled by David Cronshaw on
his debut, and then Anthony Cox and Shakoor Ali put on the best stand
of the innings for the visitors. Cox departed for 22 but Ali stood firm,
surviving a strong appeal for a catch behind by just about everyone
around but the umpire ruled in his favour. Imran Hussain returned to finish the innings off and took figures of 2-21 home with him. Star man though was Zaed Hussain who took 3-27. Youngsters David Cronshaw (1-20), Simon Hanson (1-22) and Matthew Donnelly (2-9) all bowled well for Accrington.
