Clitheroe Date For Fowler
Friday August 12th 2016

Accrington old boy Graeme Fowler is appearing at the Grand Theatre, Clitheroe, in November.

Fowler, who amassed 16,000 runs for Lancashire and England, was seen by many as a maverick, happy-go-lucky cricketer.
His international career was cut short by a potentially fatal injury soon after he became the first-ever England batsman to score a double century in India.

His tour antics were the stuff of legend: did he really have to be carried out of Elton John’s hotel suite by Ian Botham, blood pouring from his wounds after he’d drunkenly fallen through a glass coffee table?

He also took on the West Indies fast bowlers at their menacing peak – and lived to tell the tale.

But that was only part of it.

After retiring as a player, he went on to found the Centre of Excellence at Durham University, which became a model for others to follow.

There he helped breed the next generation of cricketers, with future England captain Andrew Strauss just one Test player who learned from Fowler’s coaching know-how.

But Fowler also faced another mighty challenge, battling depression and has worked to help others facing up to this debilitating illness, one he talks about in his new autobiography Absolutely Foxed.

Now Fowler, who was affectionately nicknamed Foxy at Old Trafford, will be the special guest at the Grand Theatre where he will recall a career packed with extraordinary stories and some deeply moving moments.

An evening with Graeme Fowler. Clitheroe Grand Theatre, November 23rd. Tickets cost £10. Box office 01200 421599
