Cup classic in the pipeline

Wednesday November 26th

The Worsley Cup draw has thrown up a potential classic with Accrington being paired with local rivals Enfield.

The two clubs met in the classic 1989 final with visitors Enfield coming out on top after a fierce battle.

The draw for the first round has thrown up some interesting pairings with a re-run of last seasons final and two local derbies. Holders Rawtenstall will return to the scene of their momentous triumph in August to take on league champions East Lancs at Alexandra Meadows.

Accrington will entertain Enfield and Burnley will host Lowerhouse in eagerly awaited derby ties.

Haslingden will visit Centre Vale to take on Todmorden in a replay of the 2000 final and Rishton will play Nelson at Blackburn Road.

Bacup will entertain Church at Lanehead in a match that always produces surprises. Ramsbottom and Colne have byes.

Accrington v Enfield
Bacup v Church
East Lancs v Rawtenstall
Lowerhouse v Burnley
Rishton v Nelson
Todmorden v Haslingden
BYES: Colne and Ramsbottom

Matches will be played on Sunday May 9th.

East Lancs will also have home advantage in the Colne Trophy on Saturday April 17th. The traditional curtain raiser between the league champions and Worsley Cup holders again pairs East Lancs with their conquerors in the final last August, Rawtenstall.

The draw for the first round of the Inter League Challenge Trophy will be made on Thursday December 4th at Rawtenstall.
