A big upset at Thorneyholme Road saw bottom club Accrington end a season long losing streak of seven defeats with a 46 run over second placed East Lancs. Professional Chad Grainger top scored with 41 in Accrington's 134-8 and then took 5-46 to help bowl east Lancs out for 88 with Scott Greaves also picking up 4-23. Accrington were soon in trouble at 16-3 with openers Mark Stevenson (2), Paul Barratt (4) and Wayne Roberts (1) all back in the pavilion. Grainger and Martin Whittle (23) put on 44 before Grainger was bowled by Ian Haworth (4-39). Whittle and Tofeeq Khan put on 26 before Khan was caught behind by Matt Egan off Haworth for 12. Whittle (23) became Haworth's next victim at 89 and four runs later wicketkeeper Mick Wilson (1) was trapped in front by the medium pacer. Greaves was run out for 9 at 119 leaving skipper Brian Holmes unbeaten on 32 when the innings closed on 134-8. Grainger trapped Dave Pearson (1) in front and then had skipper Mark Lomas caught by Barratt without scoring at 12. Two more wickets fell at 20 with Phil Mercer (1) trapped in front by Greaves and opener Daryl Redhead (14) caught by Stevenson off Grainger. Professional Billy Stelling (4) was caught by Stevenson off Greaves at 30. Andy Clague and Paul Kelly put on 20 before Clague was caught behind by Wilson off Grainger for 10. Sixteen year-old John Turner (6) fell to the same combination at 61. Kelly and Nas Iqbal then put on 27, the highest stand of the innings before Iqbal was trapped in front by Greaves for 13. One run later Kelly was run out for 23 and Haworth was cleaned up by Greaves first ball to give Accrington a long awaited first league win of the season.
