Lancashire League champions Accrington picked up the first silverware of the 2014 season when they retained the Ron Singleton Colne Trophy with a comprehensive 86 run win over Worsley Cup holders Burnley at Thorneyholme Road. Accrington captain Stuart Crabtree top scored with an impressive 93 as the champions posted an imposing 237-8. Crabtree hit six fours and five sixes from 101 balls, adding 67 with his professional Ockert Erasmus who hit four boundaries in making 28. Tom Lawson picked up Graeme Sneddon at the end of a wayward first over, but the young left arm paceman also bagged Jacob Clarke (1) in taking 2-32. Graham Lalor accounted for opener Simon Hanson (6) and after Burnley skipper Bharat Tripathi had removed Erasmus, Sam Excell (19) added 43 with Crabtree before falling to Burnley professional Chris Holt. Ramiz Hussain (14) Bryn Hargreaves (13) and Matt Wilson (12) also chipped in to punish Burnley's seven man attack. Accrington opening bowlers David Ormerod and Jimmy Hayhurst kept it tight by bowling straight through their allotted ten overs. At the 20 over mark, Burnley were restricted to 37-2 whereas Accrington had made 105-4. Ormerod took the wicket of Dan Pickup (4) in conceding 16 runs and Hayhurst bagged opener Chris Burton (2) and David Brown (11). Skipper Tripathi made 41 but it was an uphill struggle as Burnley never looked like getting to grips with the task. Paul Mortimer made 17 and an unbroken last wicket stand of 24 between Lawson (13 not out) and James Capstick (10 not out) made the score more respectable. Erasmus took 2-28 and Clarke 2-24 with Wilson claiming four victims.
